I moved to Hawaii on September 11, 2011 in pursuit of furthering my career with a corporation that I had spent (in my opinion) a respectable amount of time providing quality service for/with. My alternative plan was to pursue a master’s degree in social work. I ended up not being able to find my feet, and have spent the last 5+ years navigating and negotiating the social system as my own habitually employed, chronically houseless client.

As the book “A Framework for Understanding Poverty” by Ruby K. Payne points out, poverty is not merely about money ~ far from it. Poverty, properly understood, is a mindset that is brought about by a lack of resources. On the surface, poverty appears to be the result of a lack of money, but experientially poverty is the manifestation of a lack of opportunity to earn (sufficient) money in the first place. This book has been controversial, and I find myself agreeing with Payne’s broader points, but taking issue with the finer ones. I plan to include my critique of this book on Katty Rant for free, incorporating the input of other experts on the topic of poverty.
